Year 7-10 HASS

As part of our ‘Making and transforming the Australian nation’ unit, Grade 9 students hunted for gold. Students were able to learn about the gold rush through purchasing a gold rush license, hunting for gold and selling it at the best price. They encountered corrupt police, aggressive bush rangers and gold that was difficult to find.

How long would it take to walk from Australia to China? This is just one of the many questions students have explored in grade 7 as part of our unit, ‘Deep time history of Australia’. Students have enjoyed learning about the ancient past and the histories of early First Nations Peoples of Australia.

In our 9/10 HASS program, the ‘Big Moments in Sport’ class have been studying the impact sport can have on the world. As part of this, students were encouraged to reflect on how they overcome challenges.

When a challenge comes up in my life my first reaction will be to give up and not want to take this challenge on headfirst but eventually I come around do my best that I can do in a situation that provides a challenge for me. Some challenges are very difficult and some are so small but they still have an impact, if you can embrace a challenge it can make you feel more successful in life and you can feel like you are continuing to move forward, but if you struggle to take on challenges it can change what your future ends up like.

I love challenges and when there is a challenge in front of me then I focus and do as much as I can possibly do. I don’t like to pull out of challenges because that is how you will never get better. I do agree that challenges help growth and learning in your skills and performance in your sport, in any sport.

I like to see challenges a chance to learn and improve something, taking them head on can be quite challenging but I enjoy embracing challenges to help me improve and learn. In metal work I learnt welding for the first time the other week and have never known anything about it but took the challenge on very well and successfully practiced a strip of welding.
