Year 10 Aged Care Discovery and Hospitality Taster Day

Students from Year 10 attended two separate information days in Devonport on Wednesday 7 August - an Aged Care Discovery Day at Meercroft Park Aged Care and a Hospitality Taster Day at the Quality Gateway Hotel. Both programs aimed to show young people their industries and were recruiting interest in school based apprenticeships and traineeships.

With Tasmania's population ageing at the fastest rate in the country, the Aged Care Discovery Day was a great opportunity for our young people to explore the opportunities in that sector. Fifty percent of the current aged care workforce will have retired in the next 15 years, and 5000 new workers will be needed in the next couple of years.

Kitchen, laundry, grounds and maintenance, cleaning, carers, business, administration and nursing staff will all be in greater demand. The YouTube link 'Careers in Aged Care - Can't Do It Without You' was shown to the students and offers a good insight for anyone interested in the opportunities in the sector

The Tasmanian Hospitality Association promoted their partnership with the Department of Education, seeking interest from students to engage in their industry in a school based apprenticeship.

Both industries are able to host students in a paid training certificate courses for 2 days per week, while the student remains enrolled at their local school, completing their Tasmanian Certificate of Education.

Penguin District School would like to thank those involved in making these opportunities available for our students. Thanks also to Mel Walker, our school chaplain, who assisted with the trip.
