Year 8 Term 3 Overview

English

During English throughout Term 3, students will complete, then present, their recorded novel study review. Students from 8A will then work with Ms Butler to focus on narrative writing. 8B students will work with Mr Conkie, with a focus on writing persuasively. Students will learn to identify, and use, a range of effective persuasive techniques to improve their persuasive writing, increasing their knowledge of a range of strategies. They will analyse the work of others and plan, then produce, a structured persuasive argument.

Maths

Students are completing measurement and linear graphing in Term 3. They will use formulae they establish to calculate area and volume of regular objects, convert between units of measurement, define parts of circles and use Phi for the first time. Using their number skills to recognise patterns, students will graph points and establish rules to match the graphs.

Science

Students will complete their inquiry projects and complete a geology unit in Term 3. Students will perform experiments to model the rock cycle, intrusive and extrusive igneous rocks and plate techtonics to more firmly establish how matter is recycled on the Earth.

HASS

In HASS we will have a focus on Polynesian expansion. We will be looking at how humans migrated throughout the Pacific Ocean and how their way of life helped or hindered their progress.

Health

In Health this term students will be looking at Drug Education. Some particular areas of focus are: legal and illegal drugs, classification of drugs, alcohol (types, standard drinks, short/long term effects, pathway, binge drinking, harms and strategies, advertising and statistics), peer pressure and risk taking, and cultural factors related to alcohol consumption.

Physical Education

Students will be participating in movement activities (dance and skipping) in the first part of the term. This will be followed by a Volleyball and Fitness Testing unit to finish the term.

Music

In Term 3 music, students will be covering melodic dictation and the history of contemporary music, as well as working towards an individual practical presentation.

Food and Fibre

In Term 3 we will be finishing off sewing projects. They have made sewing samples of seams, hems and patterned stitches and are now extending that knowledge to use in, and produce, a garment of their choosing from available patterns and appropriate skill level. Coming home in the next few weeks are hoodies, shorts, beanies, scarves and ponchos. We will be heading back into the kitchen in a few weeks’ time to further practise and develop our cooking skills and processes, assisting students to be confident and able to take on Year 9 and 10 option courses.

ICT

Students in ICT are planning their own fictional company. They will be using graphic design techniques to draw and digitally enhance a logo which they’ll use in a website.

Drama

In Drama in Term 3 students will be continuing their introduction to Shakespeare unit.  At the end of last term the students watched and analysed ‘She’s the Man’ which is a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘Twelfth Night’.  The students are creating and presenting an assignment on the films.  This can be either a comparison study of two films or a plot summary and analysis.  The students will have a wide range of options in how they choose to present their assignment – from a written essay to their own dramatized performance.  We will conclude the term looking at script construction in preparation for the students writing and directing their own whole class performance in Term 4.

 Art

Students will start the term with a clay unit. Students will be making a small vase and adding various decorations inspired by Sydney artist Jenny Orchard.

MDT

Students are continuing to cut out their parts for their intarsia themed clocks. When assembled, their work will create a wooden ‘picture’ of a scene or object of the student’s own choice and design. Written portfolios are being compiled as the project progresses.
