Principal's Report

As parents and teachers, we often discuss with young people the importance and value of a ‘have a go’ attitude. We know this is not always easy, particularly when it might be a non preferred, or a new or challenging situation that pushes people out of their comfort zone. It is always easier tackling these sorts of situations where you feel like you are well supported, regardless of the outcome. The idea of distance running can set off a variety of feelings for people, often dependent on how supportive the environment is that they are in. Our senior students have done a tremendous job supporting younger students to participate in this week’s cross country and I know this was appreciated by teachers and younger students.

This afternoon, one of our primary students commented to her friends on how she was feeling disappointed about crossing the line towards the end of the field after walking sections of the track, still feeling that she had given her best. A Year 10 student heard this and asked if she could add her observations. Very warmly, she congratulated the younger student on how, whilst she recognized it wasn’t easy, she had taken on the challenge of the race. She explained that an alternative could have been to not have a go at all! Her house group was able to get points because she had done her best and had a go, and that ‘wouldn’t have happened if she was at home’. She talked about how that choice said something about her character, and for that she should feel really proud. The younger student walked off feeling noticeably better about her efforts and that she felt valued for what she had achieved.

It is these sorts of unscripted moments that a teacher can overhears that make us appreciate the benefits of being a district (Kinder to Year 12) school. Our school is a reflection of the community that we live in - one that is kind, supportive and leaves us feeling proud to be part of it.

3 Way Interviews

Thank you to the parents, guardians and students that have made time to meet during the parent/teacher sessions over the past two weeks. If you have been unable to make a time this week, please contact your child’s teacher, or our office, to make an appropriate time between now and the end of term. A further reminder that Miss Pratt’s meeting times will be rescheduled.

Capital Works Update

Our Project Working Group has assessed the tender applications and provided a recommendation to the Department of Education for approval. Our first planning meeting with the lead contractor is scheduled for the following week and we expect to have a plan in place that will see works taking place as soon as the upcoming holidays.
