Student Board - Secondary Campus Update
Throughout Term 2, the secondary Student Board successfully conducted 4 weeks of lunch time activities involving 3 point shoot-outs, Kahoot competitions, Musical Bingo and a movie later in the term when the weather was not as friendly. These activities were held every second week. These lunchtime activities were popular and provided activities to help fill in some cold and wet lunch breaks.
3 point shootout: students from grade 7-12 participated over the week with winners of each grade group receiving $5 canteen vouchers as prizes.
Kahoot: a mixed group of students from across the grades participated in a competitive manner with 2 groups receiving prizes of McDonald’s vouchers and chocolate for their efforts.
Musical Bingo: although experiencing a few technical hitches initially, this again was successful with approximately 25 students participating in a cooperative manner. Prizes of McDonald’s vouchers and chocolate were again allocated to the winners.
Movie: the movie Shrek was shown in the Drama room over 4 lunch times with an average of 40 students attending each day. Some students enjoyed singing along to the songs and there was even some dancing at one point! This was a really popular activity with student requests for another movie in Term 3 which we will organise.
Our major fundraiser for the term was our Red Day, held to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis and Muscular Dystrophy. Students and staff were encouraged to wear something red for a gold coin donation and we sold bags of red lollies at lunch time on the secondary campus (donated by Sally Stretton) for $1 per bag. With the combined efforts of the primary and secondary campus we raised $926 which was a fantastic effort. This money was split between the 2 charities with the money going to both the Tasmanian Cystic Fibrosis group and the Melbourne Muscular Dystrophy group as these are the foundations that directly support some of our PDS students.
During the term we had students from both the secondary and primary campuses attend a meeting with the Commissioner for Children & Young People (CCYP) as CCYP Ambassadors in Devonport. At this meeting they discussed some of the issues young people face and some projects that they will support throughout the year. They will attend another meeting in Term 3 in Burnie on 19th August and then a day session in October in Hobart. It is fantastic to have our student leaders involved in this initiative.
In Term 3, the secondary board will be looking to run the following activities at the secondary campus:
- Secondary social - week 6 where music students at PDS will have the opportunity to perform live as part of the entertainment. Information about the social will be sent out to families soon.
- Movie week: another lunch time movie will be shown later in the term for students.
- Footy/sports colour Day: to raise money for the Fight Cancer Foundation. Students will be able to wear clothing from their favourite sport team and we will run lunchtime sporting activities.
In Term 4 we are considering running a water-based activities day for MND and will look at the support from staff for another car wash to raise money to go towards the 2020 Relay for Life. Other activities will be brainstormed later in Term 3 in preparation for the final term of 2019.
