The Power of a Good Book

Book week and dressing up as one of our favourite characters is great fun for our primary students and always an event that our students look forward to. Reading has been and always will be a simple experience that can be life changing – it helps us to connect and make sense of our own experiences, with other people and with the world around us. We are fortunate in Australia that there is a strong appreciation for literature, and some outstanding authors that create texts that engage and inspire our young people. Since 1946, the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) have continued to provide an annual structure for celebrating quality texts by Australian authors. Looking back through the years, Christobel Mattingly, Alan Baillie, Colin Thielie, Emily Rodda, Margaret Wild, Shaun Tan and Graeme Base are names across the last few decades that many of us may recognise as featuring as shortlisted books by the CBCA. We hope that book week provides an opportunity for families to share or discuss books that they have connected with over time.  

Capital Works Update

Thursday of this week, the Minister for Education and Training, Jeremy Rockliff MP visited our school for an update on the project and officially break the ground for the new redevelopment. Grade 2 student Chad, joined by Jayla, Imogen and Will, was able to dig the shovel in the position where his grade 4 classroom will be when works are complete in 2022. Each week we will provide a few photos from around the site to show some of the changes that are underway.

Production

Tonight marks the opening night of our school production of Phantom of the Talent Factor. On behalf of the students, staff and volunteers, I would like to thank our school community for supporting their efforts across the last 12 months. Whether driving your child to rehearsals on weekends, listening to endless guitar riffs at home, feeling like Bon Jovi was on repeat in every room of the house or providing regular words of encouragement, this support has contributed to what will be a memorable experience for all of the young people involved.

Tassie’s Better With Balance

Mr Adrian Beard will be taking some leave to contribute to the ‘Tassie’s Better with Balance Challenge 2020’ – a fundraising and awareness-raising endurance event taking place from Monday 26th October to Sunday 1st November in support of The Salvation Army, Tasmania. 10 Tasmanians will trek, cycle and kayak over some of our state’s most iconic, beautiful, most productive and most challenging landscapes. Participants will be set off on the challenge from Mt Victoria in the state North East. This journey will take the participants through iconic Tasmanian wilderness such as the Bay of Fires Mountain Bike Tracks, the Freycinet Peninsula and Walls of Jerusalem Tracks. As a further sign of their commitment, participants will climb 5 mountains over 1200 meters and kayak the Great Lake. Support of their journey will raise money to assist The Salvation Army in supporting fellow Tasmanians who are doing it tough in these challenging times. Good luck and safe travels Mr Beard!
