Principal's Report

Safety in our Community

Last week, I shared a piece in our newsletter relating to safe behaviour in and around our school – both during and after hours. One step that many schools take to provide a sense of assurance to their local community is the installation of CCTV cameras. Whilst these are primarily a deterrent to illegal or antisocial behaviour after hours, they can be called on to explore issues that may need further follow up by school leadership and Tasmania Police. Around 4am Monday morning, we had some intruders in to the construction site. Whilst there was some theft of non-school property and disruption to the construction site, obviously they didn’t read last week’s newsletter as they were caught on CCTV vision when they attempted to enter the school building. This footage has been passed on to Tasmania Police for further investigation. If you have any information that may relate to suspicious activity around the school in the leadup to Monday – please contact the school administration on 6434 2222 or Devonport CIB on 131 444.

Further to this, it’s a reminder to be vigilant, even in communities like ours that have lower reported rates of crime.  In our prep-grade 6 assembly, we talked about the importance of having a predictable way of getting to and from school, getting to and from the bus, or even having a ‘known and expected’ spot that children will meet their parents after school. Discussing and sticking to the expected ‘plan’ to get to and from school should be an important process for every student that is known and understood by family members.

Parent Group Meeting

Hi all, as we wave goodbye to 2020 we are really looking forward to exploring plenty of exciting ways that we can engage our school/parent community this year. This will be starting off with our first meeting for the year. We'll be 'christening' the new meeting room at the secondary campus with a parent group meeting on Monday the 1st at 9am. Parents are asked to meet at the Basketball Stadium car park and  Mr Grining will walk parents through to the new area. We will also have a sneak peek of the first part of our school redevelopment.

Congratulations

Year 9 student Charlotte and Year 10 student Braxton have experienced successes recently with their chosen sport of netball. Charlotte has been selected to compete in the under 19 statewide competition for Devon and Braxton has been chosen to represent the state in the national titles to be held in Adelaide later this year. We love hearing about the successes of our students in extra curricular activities outside of school, these can be sent to penguin.district.school@education.tas.gov.au
