For all upcoming events please see the Penguin District School Calendar
This week Public Health have lifted the ‘school outbreak’ that has applied to our Prep to Year 6 classes. There is no longer a requirement to families to be conducting rapid antigen tests (RATs) every second day. It is also no longer a requirement for visitors to our school to wear a mask when they are outside. Thank you to our school community for taking all of the necessary steps and precautions that have allowed us to move out of the school outbreak. The number of active cases across our school community has dramatically decreased with now less than ten staff/students isolating as per Public Health requirements. This is a tremendously reassuring for our staff/student community of almost 800, to safely and effectively manage teaching and learning in a COVID safe way.
Taswater have put in place a ‘Boil Water Alert’ for large parts of Penguin and the surrounding area. Taswater have provided plenty of drinking water for our students to fill up their drinking water for each school day whilst the alert is in place. We are aware that Taswater have been undertaking maintenance in the area to remediate this and encourage families to monitor the Facebook page and the Taswater website for any updates. https://www.taswater.com.au/news/service-interruptions/boil-water-alerts
We have been able to proceed with some of our school activities, whilst there have been others that we will just need to postpone until later in the term, or perhaps later in the year. This week we were able to enjoy blue skies and warmish conditions for our Secondary Campus Surf Carnival, whilst our Primary Campus Athletics Carnival will be postponed until later in the year. We are taking an approach to review all of our school activities and excursions in the weeks and days prior to ensure that they are COVID safe and have viable numbers to support broad participation and engagement. Thank you to our Health and Physical Education team that have planned these events for term 1. We look forward to the results in coming newsletters.
We have a number of students that had competed in the recent Tasmania Junior Surf Carnival hosted by Penguin Surf Club. This was a great showcase for our local community and in recognising the tremendous participation numbers and high achievements from the Penguin juniors, their club was awarded with overall 3rd place in Tasmania and the handicap winner, which is determined on the size of the club/community. Over 40 Penguin juniors competed with many students from our school – congratulations to this group for their individual and collective efforts. We will have some reports from students in our upcoming assemblies.

This week in 1-2 MP, we combined our thinking about place and our wonderings about leaves by undertaking an investigation into how we can create a stabile home for our leafy (wooden peg doll). We collected our ‘materials’ during our mini Wonder Walk before experimenting with techniques for attaching found treasures to a cardboard cake base. Our challenge was that we could only use nature’s gifts as part of our structure, and to hold it all together. (No glue, sticky tape, string, or scissors allowed!). There was a lot of deep thinking, tinkering, problem solving, and frustration as we began our investigation. Many of us left our bases with a pile of parts and many questions. “I can’t make a hole in the cardboard. What can I do?” “What can I use to hold the sticks together?” “It’s not working. I wonder if I try this? “ Tomorrow afternoon we will continue our investigation and share our successful strategies. Thank you to Jochi’s family for providing us with a wonderful bag of leaves and vines to help us with our learning. Donations of plant parts are most welcome. If you have any strategies for holding objects together (that don’t involve man-made materials), please share them with your child. I’m sure we’ll have some great ideas after ‘sleeping on’ our designs overnight and letting our imaginations wander…
This afternoon our Year 5/6 students had the opportunity to meet and listen to Olympian and World Champion rower, Sarah Hawe, who was accompanied by Ryan (AOC staff) and AOC Vice President Ian Chesterman. Sarah was part of the successful Women’s Four World Champion winning teams in 2017 and 2019 and was selected for the Olympic Team in 2020.
We were very fortunate and thankful to Miss Hayward who had won this opportunity for us by entering a competition late last year as part of the Olympics Unleashed program.
Sarah’s presentation was inspiring and touched on our school values of growth and aspiration. In addition to being a successful athlete, Sarah peaked the interests of numerous students when she shared her occupation of being a vet.
Sarah’s love of and desire to become an Olympian started when she too won a competition by guessing the number of gold medals Australia would win at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
Throughout her presentation, Sarah shared the importance of everyone being capable of achieving great success in their life, goal setting to achieve your goals, persisting when times get tough, drawing on the support of others to help you along the way and ‘power posing’ to increase your confidence and belief.
Rohan (aptly named) was lucky enough to be selected to race off against Sarah on the ergo rowing machine. Rohan produced an impressive effort, covering 106m in 30 seconds.
We were all encouraged to get involved in something we are passionate about and unleash our potential!

International Women’s Day - Secondary Campus
International Women’s Day was celebrated on Monday March 7 at the secondary campus due to the surf carnival being held on Tuesday March 8. We had two guest speakers on the day who provided positive messages and role modelling for our year 7 -12 girls and female staff. Angela Revell who spoke about her journey and current business ‘Revellation’ along with Felicity (Flick) Richardson who does many amazing things in the community but is also a photographer promoting women and their beauty.
At the end of the presentations delicious biscuits were provided for all involved.
Some of the positive messages provided were: be brave, be yourself, you are beautiful, take risks and try new things, there are no boundaries/limits unless we create them ourselves, support each other/sisterhood and empower and support others.
Thanks to Angela and Felicity for their time and messages on the day. Thanks to Ms Fitzallen for our delicious treats.

COVID-19 New Changes to Hay Fever Advice
If your child has hay fever symptoms, please keep them at home and test for COVID-19 using a rapid antigen test (RAT).
If your child tests negative on a RAT and symptoms continue, Public Health advises that you must do a second RAT 24 hours later, or seek a PCR test.
If the second RAT or PCR remains negative, this is sufficient evidence for your child to return to school if they feel well.
If symptoms change or increase in severity, please see your treating medical practitioner for review.
Please know that Public Health advice can change at short notice, and we appreciate your patience as we respond to these changes as quickly as possible.
If you have any questions, please contact the school office 64 34 2222
