Penguin District School Calendar

Within a ten minute period on a Friday afternoon, I was given a number of reminders about why our school community is a pretty special place. Spending time in the primary campus playground, I was speaking with a few students that were keeping a watchful eye on the blue tongue lizard in the sensory garden. They were able to talk about the reasons that we need to care for wildlife and the role that we can play in providing a safe place for our ‘resident’ lizard and other native animals. I then moved through in to the playground and a younger student was sitting on the buddy bench that was donated in previous years by the Penguin Lions Club. It didn’t take long before the young person was surrounded by a group of other students, all very enthusiastically offering to help and have them join in the game that they were heading off to play. Just as the lunch music went, the grade 1/2’s all organised themselves without adult assistance ready for Friday Fitness lead by our older students. Coordinating a large number of young people can be daunting for many adults, and our grade 10 student did this with a warmth and guidance that the younger students responded to beautifully. Wherever you may be over the coming week, we’d encourage our school community members to watch and appreciate the social conscience and potential that sits with the young people in our community, just as we get to enjoy seeing it in action on a daily basis at school.
Progress Report
A Progress Report will arrive home towards the end of term for all students from the primary and secondary campus. The purpose of the report is to inform parents about how their child is settling into school and to advise them of any early areas of concern. All Tasmanian Government schools are transitioning across 2022 to some new changes as to how we communicate progress to parents. If you would like to discuss information from the report, please contact the office and organise an appointment with your child’s teacher.
National Day of Action against Bullying
Friday March 18th is National Day of Action against Bullying. As a school community we will be focusing on the respectful behaviours that we expect to see each day. If students, staff and parents live these behaviours, then bullying won’t occur.
We will be asking our students some of the following questions.
- How can you show respect towards others?
- What body language would you show to others that is respectful?
- What language would you use that is respectful?
- How do you treat property respectfully; what would we see people doing in the classroom and in the grounds?
- How can you show consideration towards others?
- What type of behaviours do respectful people show towards those who are sharing their opinions, even if they do not agree with them?

1-2NG and 1-2LT are inquiring into place. 1-2NG used string to create a place and thought about what they would need if they had to stay in their place all day, what sorts of things they could do in their place and things they could do to improve their place. Then 1-2NG became the teachers and shared their learning and wonders with 1-2LT.
Surf Life Saving Junior State Titles
Congratulations to these individuals who competed in the Surf Life Saving Junior State Titles earlier in March. The competition was held in idyllic Preservation Bay and our Penguin representatives did us proud in their interactions, their personal best efforts and their amazing results.

The Sensory Garden is blooming at the moment with lots of vegetables and flowers flourishing. Year 1/2 Paterson have been enjoying harvesting ripe vegetables to share with their families. They have also been weeding and putting fresh bark on the paths between the vegetable plots. They have enjoyed sharing stories about their gardens at home, often with special mention of grandparents gardens. Everyone has participated well and co-operated as part of hard working teams.
Our Year 7 and 8 students have been working hard in Numeracy Growth classes to develop new strategies and skills in multiplicative thinking. This will help them to solve all kinds of mathematical problems involving multiplication, division, fractions, rates and ratios.
Our students have shared some comments about what they think of Numeracy Growth lessons:
‘We like working with other people of the same ability, in small groups.”
“It makes it easier to talk to the teacher and get help.”
“I think a lot extra than in normal Maths, and it’s rewarding.”
‘It’s fun!’
“Numeracy Growth is good but complicated. It starts hard but you get strategies to help solve problems and it gets easier.”
“Numeracy Growth is good, better than normal Maths.”
“It’s not exactly easy but easier. I’m learning more about ratios and fractions.”
“It’s hard and a challenge, but it helps when you get used to how to solve the problems.”

Last Friday night Penguin District School entered its first team in the primary cricket roster in over 7 years. The team travelled to Sacred Heart Catholic School in Ulverstone and the weather couldn’t be better for cricket! The captain (Sammy) elected to bat first and sent Alfie and himself into bat, getting Penguin off to a strong start. As the game progressed and everyone developed a better understanding of the new rules, it was clear that we this suited both an experienced cricketer as well as some of our brand-new players! Big thanks to first time cricketers Ollie, Emily and Eve who decided to help out at the last minute!
When our 20 overs were up, we posted a competitive total with solid contributions from Sammy (21 runs) and Nate (15 runs). A highlight of the day was Emily’s last over stand where she was able to bat the whole over herself and add a few extra runs!
When it came to bowling and fielding, everyone was able to contribute whether it be stopping boundaries or encouraging their teammates. What really stood out for our team was the encouragement for the Scared Heart team! Even when times got tough, Penguin students consistently displayed what good sportsmanship looked like and ensured the other teams’ achievement were celebrated.
A huge thank you to Koah who nominated himself to play for Sacred Heart who were two players short. This also led to Koah getting the huge wicket of big brother Alfie! Another thanks should go to the parents that came and supported the future stars! Lets see how we can go next week against Forth Primary School.
GO PENGUIN!
