What does it mean to be a leader? Our year 7-10 student board and house captains received badges and blazers in two smaller assemblies this week and this prompted us to discuss leadership in the year 9-10 and then in a year 5-6 meeting today. It is a credit to the individual students that have shown the courage to nominate themselves firstly, and then to be voted to represent their peers. However, as we discussed with the students, you don’t have to have a title or a badge to be a leader. We spoke with younger grades who described a leader as:
- someone that you look up to
- someone that you can go to for help
- someone who will be a good role model
- someone who will listen
- someone who will put others before themselves
If we were considering these ‘definitions’, then all of our senior students should be seeing themselves as leaders. They were asked to reflect on how their actions and behaviours showed that of a leader, in the eyes of our younger students and the social responsibility that they have as a member of a larger school community.
Safe Online Behaviour
Navigating the internet and mobile technology safely is a key skill for today’s children and adults. The rapidly changing pace of technology means that society needs to respond accordingly to ensure that we are keeping our community safe. We are aware of a number of apps and platforms that are used effectively by students, but at times can cause a real headache for families when online behaviour is not safe or respectful of others. The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has an excellent range of resources and importantly, the function for parents and children to report online abuse and issues.
As a school we are aware that the Office of the eSafety Commissioner provide high level supports, actions and follow-up in responding to inappropriate use of technology in ways that are trying to bully, hurt or intimidate others. I strongly encourage families to review the information online as a way to educate their children and to report issues as they occur. https://www.esafety.gov.au/

Counting Collections in Prep HR
In Prep HR we have been working on counting groups of objects. We went searching in the Kinder yard to see if we could find and then count our collections. We are working at only saying one number for each object when we count, we have found that pointing at or moving the items in our collections helps. Here is a small sample of some of our gatherings.
In Grade 7 and 8 Numeracy Growth we have been working on thirds, sixths, fifths and tenths. Groups of students made their own number lines to show where the fractions sit in between zero and one. There were a few measuring errors but they did a great job working collaboratively to show their understanding.
On Friday March 25 the Year 8 students headed off to Camp Clayton with Mr Davis, Mr deRuyter and Pete. The weather was amazing. After a quick safety briefing, toilet run and sun screening we headed off into our first activities and face our fears. 'Team deRuyter' headed off to the Giant Swing and The 'Better Team' headed off to The Tower. At Giant Swing students take it in turns in being harnessed up and safely clipped into a giant swing before being pulled up into the air by the rest of the team. After taking in the amazing view from 6 meters up in the air students pull the release and off they go. Over at The Tower students take it in terns in rock climbing up to the top platform of the tower before being safely clipped into a 15-meter zip line.
After these two amazing activities we had some morning tea before some free time at either ga ga ball, beach volleyball, putt putt or the trampolines. Then the two teams moved into the Challenge Course or Team Rescue. The Challenge Course is a variety of team challenges like getting the whole team over a wall, or balancing on a lopsided group sew-saw, or navigating a giant spider's web. Team Rescue is a scenario where the whole team must navigate across an obstacle course using different length planks to assist them while also carrying an injured person (a dummy) on a stretcher.
We then had lunch before getting ‘sunscreened’ up again and heading out to do all of the activities we hadn’t yet completed. Everyone had a great day and it was amazing to see our values of courage, collaboration, safety and respect on display. Enjoy the photos.
