Welcome back to the start of term 2! A particular welcome to the new staff and students that are joining our school community across both campuses. Mrs Arianne Popowski is joining our year 7-10 teaching team and brings a wealth of experience from her time at Reece High School. Sue Hughes who has a great understanding of our school community will be a regular fixture in our 7-10 teaching team for the remainder of the year as well. Miss Zoe Gee is also starting term 2 at the secondary campus with us as she completes her final professional placement of her teaching qualification, teaching across years 7-10. Manny Roman, Nikki Hayler and Kate Finch will also be new faces in our school as they are undertaking professional placements in Education Support with us across terms 2 and 3 through TasTAFE.
Congratulations to Mitchell Enright and Erin Simonis who were the successful applicants in recently advertised permanent teacher assistant positions, we are excited that you will be joining our team as permanent staff members. Tori Rouse, Ceilidh Newbury, Brady McGregor and Katherine Smith also join us in teacher assistant support roles across each campus. A special welcome to the new students and their families that are joining us – Lucinda, McKinlee, Zara and Sapphire. I hope that you all find Penguin to be a supportive and inclusive learning community, just as I have during my time at PDS.
COVID Update
The requirements for students, staff and visitors in Tasmanian Schools are largely the same as last term. The three things that we ask families to continue to be vigilant with are that; masks are required in all indoor settings at school, that families continue to monitor their children’s health and stay at home if unwell and thirdly, contact the school if you have any questions about any of the COVID or close contact requirements and our administration staff will be happy to help.
Casual Clothes Day – ‘Paint the Town Green’
All schools are encouraged to join in supporting the Tasmanian Jackjumpers by promoting 'Paint the Town Green' Day and encourage students and staff to wear green items of clothing.
All schools that take part will win a clinic led by the JackJumpers community coaches and their mascot Jack the Jumper! The winning class will receive a prize pack including JJs beanies, singlet tops, colouring in books, and JackJumpers Spaulding basketballs. Our Student Leaders will also look to run activities during the day.
We know that parents appreciate as much notice with days like this, we will hold our day on Monday 9th May.
NAPLAN ‘hints and tips for students and parents’
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will take place in Week 2 and 3 of this term for Year 3, 5, 7 and 9 students nationwide. If you have any questions or concerns about your child's participation in NAPLAN please don't hesitate to contact our assistant principals Matt Perry matthew.perry@education.tas.gov.au or Geoff Davis geoffrey.davis@education.tas.gov.au
As a parent, it helps your child if you take a positive view of the NAPLAN assessments. It’s better to see them as a learning and resilience building opportunity just like any other learning experience across your child’s time at school. While many children may be comfortable approaching NAPLAN, some students may be feeling anxious or nervous. Regardless here are some tips to help prepare your child for the
NAPLAN assessments:
- Take your cues from your child: If your child doesn’t worry about it then neither should you. Be careful not to create a problem that doesn’t exist by regularly talking about, or worse, worrying about the test. Contact the school if you are concerned.
- Focus on them doing their best & trying hard: Choose your words carefully when you speak with your kids. As with all their learning activities, place your focus squarely on effort rather than results.
- Listen to any concerns they have: If your child tells you they have some nerves then validate their feelings, rather than shut them down with a ‘get over it’ response. “Yes, sometimes tests can be a little scary, but they get easier every time you take them.” "Sometime we have to do things that can be hard or challenging and that helps us develop new skills" Use this as an opportunity to develop greater resilience.
- Give them some relaxation ideas: Anxious or nervous kids will benefit from some simple relaxation strategies. Taking some deep breaths, changing their thinking and exercising the morning of the test are some simple ways to help kids get some feeling of control.
- Importantly, help them retain their perspective: NAPLAN doesn’t test everything and we only do it once a year. We know that so many of us are amazing at so many things that NAPLAN doesn’t test. Keeping perspective is a life skill that we all need to practise.

Our Primary Campus, 3 Way Interviews are being held in Week 3 this term.
The 3 Way Interview provides a forum for teachers, students and parents to recognise student progress and achievement as well as identifying areas for further improvement. It allows for students to reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning. Together as a team the family, student and teacher can identify some agreed upon goals to work towards.
We believe strongly that this is a fantastic opportunity to strengthen school and family partnerships, working together to support our children and would encourage as many families to attend as possible.
To ensure that each child has an opportunity to be the focus of the discussion, it is helpful to not bring other siblings to the appointment if possible.
The 3 Way Interviews will be held on:
Tuesday 17 May |
3:00 pm - 7:00 pm |
Wednesday 18 May |
3:00 pm - 4:30 pm |
Thursday 19 May |
3:00 pm - 7:00 pm |
Bookings can be made online at
https://penguinds.schoolzineplus.com/view-session/21
You can access this site and make your own parent teacher bookings. A confirmation email will be sent to you.
The website will be live until Monday 16 May 9:00 am. We strongly advise that you make your bookings promptly.
Please see the attached booking guide for step-by-step instructions for how to book appointments through Session Keeper.
If you do not have an email address or cannot book online, please call Penguin District School on 6434 2222 and one of our administrative staff would be more than happy to help.
In order to remain on time and be respectful to all, fifteen minutes have been allocated for interviews. Please note, discussion times with the teachers will be ten minutes, with the remaining five minutes to get to the next appointment. Teachers will set timers to ensure that meetings are kept within this time limit.
We are excited about presenting our production ‘Rapunzel, A Tangled Hairy Tale’ at the Ulverstone theatre in Term 4 2022.
At the start of Term 2 we will be placing a first order for production t-shirts and hoodies for staff and students involved in the production. The shirts and hoodies will be black or purple with the production logo on the front and back (as pictured below). The cost of the t-shirt is $27. The cost of the hoodies is $55.
Order forms can be collected from the secondary campus office and can also be ordered on the Qkr App under Production Merchandise
Band members, backstage crew and ushers are encouraged, where possible, to wear the production t-shirt as part of their outfit for shows (plain black clothing is required if this t-shirt is not purchased).
Order forms and money for t-shirts and hoodies will need to be returned to the school offices (primary or secondary) by Monday May 16 to be included in the first order.
A second order will be placed at the end of Term 2, with another in Term 3 if needed.

School football starts next week. Games are played on either a Thursday or a Friday. Home games are played in school time, away games are played after school – see the below roster.
Students need to be transported to and from games. If you are unable to find transport you need to contact Miss Goninon. If there is a large number unable to attend away games, teams may need to forfeit. Students will be provided with a top to play in. This needs to be returned at the end of the season. The roster is $20 and needs to be paid to the front office before the first game next week.
Information from our School Nurse
Does your child spend too much time with a screen?
The World Health Organisation recommends:
- no more than 2 hours per day for children over the age of 4
- no more than 1 hour per day for children 2-4 years old
- and no screen time for babies under 1 year old.
Risks associated with screen time include poor posture, vision problems and unrealistic expectations.
Here’s an idea- encourage children to balance screen time with ‘green time’. Spending time outdoors is great for physical and mental health.
Als always, my door is always open if you are needing some support. You can contact me via the school office, or at alex.clark@education.tas.gov.au.
