Volunteer Week
This week recognises the tremendous contributions that volunteers make in local communities. Our school community is no exception, with countless opportunities for people to add value to the experiences of the young people in our school. Whether it is through parent help in classrooms, assisting in the breakfast club, volunteering in the sensory garden, supporting sporting teams – there are so many ways to devote your energy in a positive way through your local school.
On behalf of the staff and students, I’d like to publicly thank the many people that volunteer that time at Penguin District School!
Parent Group
We have an opportunity and a need to re-shape how we co-ordinate our parent volunteer efforts towards activities at school. As we know, without parent support, events like Mother/Fathers Day stalls, special events and fundraisers will not get off the ground. In previous years, it has been challenging to sustain a ‘regular group’ in recognising the different family and work commitments that parents in our community have. With COVID restrictions being eased, we would like to shape a calendar of events for 2022. Once we have a calendar, we can then ask for parent support for each individual event, so parents can put their hand up and decide if they are available to help out.
Jessie Eberhardt will lead this session at the primary campus on Thursday 26th from 9am-9:30am in the community learning centre.

LiFT (Learning in Families Together)
To further our connections between home and school, and to help you talk, play and learn together as a family, we have created the Take Home Trolley. You can find it in the main corridor, just past the Library and anyone is welcome to take home a game to share with their family. The booklet attached should be filled out when taking home a game, the contents are to be well looked after and returned when you have finished having fun. Please let Jessie Eberhardt know if there are any pieces missing or you’d like to discuss elements of the trolley. Enjoy!
On Wednesday 18 May Kinder B had Nature Kinder at Ferndene. We all wore our fantastic new puddlesuits, which the School Association bought for us. They kept us really warm, dry and clean! We spent our morning running down the tracks, playing games, wrapping sticks we found with wool, exploring and investigating different plants and fungi using our flip posters. Oh, and dealing with a leech or two!!
Primary Campus Cross Country 2022
The 2022 Primary Cross Country will be held of Friday 27 May. Please ensure that you child is coming to school in school uniform. Students will have time to get changed in meal breaks prior to their races. They will also need to bring a drink bottle and a warm jack/raincoat while they are waiting for their race.
Similar to 2021, Parents will be restricted to photographing from the Dial Carpark which will be fenced off. Please read through the following times to ensure you are there for your child’s race.
Grades 3 – Grade 6’s: 11:15am – 12:30pm (starting with Grade 3 girls)
Prep – Grade 2’s: 1:40pm – 2:50pm (starting with Preps)
Year 7 Mt. Montgomery House Challenge
A huge congratulations to the Year 7 students who all conquered Mt. Montgomery on Thursday!
Face paint and bandanas were provided by the House Captains to bring each house together visually. Team work, including carrying bags, cheering and supporting each other bought each group together spiritually.
Thank you to the House Captains, Hannah, Jesse, Jenna, Amarli, Fletcher and Mattae for their organisation and support for their house members – you are exceptional role models!
To the staff who ensured safety and glucose levels, thank you. Miss. Butler, Mrs. Van Essen, Ms. Murphy, Mr. Taylor, Miss. Goninon, Miss. Gee, Tori and Jackie, your enthusiasm and conversations were highly valued by the students.
Now we look towards our next adventure ..................
The school association has approved the request for hoodies to be made available again for Year 10 students in 2022. The students will be able to wear them as part of their school uniform, however, wearing them to excursions and off-site activities will be at the discretion of the teacher at the time.
Our provider this year is Donna Miller ‘Red Rogue Promotions’ and she has assisted in the development of the style and design.
- Hoodies will cost $60 and we will be placing the order towards the end of May.
- We will require a commitment from students with payment via the following options by Friday May 20 (Week 3, Term 2):
- VISA or MasterCard payments via school office
- Cash – with the appropriate money in a PDS payment envelope (with your name)
- Qkr App -Under the Uniforms Menu
If you have any questions, or wish to talk about payment options, please do not hesitate to phone me at the school on 6434 2222, or email – jade.hughes@education.tas.gov.au
We have been provided with sample sizes which will be available for students to try on prior to the order being finalised. An example of the hoodie can be seen below:
This term in wellbeing, the Year 10 students have been focused on ways they can give back to the Penguin community. Students have given up their time to work with younger students at the primary campus, have helped to pick up golf balls at the golf club and assisted at the bowls club. Students will continue to 'give back' to places in the Penguin community throughout the term.
Year 7- 10 School Football Rosters
Games are played on either a Thursday or a Friday. Home games are played in school time, away games are played after school – see the below roster.
Please see attached rosters. The 9/10 roster has had a slight adjustment due to a team withdrawing from the competition. A massive thank you to the following people who have gone above and beyond so far this season. Matthew Luck, David Guard, Tammy Guard & Lee-Anne Flint.
