National Simultaneous Storytime
This week was National Simultaneous Storytime, where an Australian picture book is shared in classrooms all around the country. The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) are in their 22nd year of the annual read-along, with their goal to have 1 million Australian children sharing a story at the same time. This year’s story was ‘Family Tree’ by author and musician Josh Pyke, with illustrations by Ronojoy Ghosh. Whilst we were unable to come together in an assembly, we recorded a video that classes could watch and then unpack the story and what it means for them.
Staff Professional Learning
In living our school value of collaboration, our teaching staff met and work together in teams across each week, with the intent of positively impacting on our teaching practice to raise the outcomes for the students at Penguin District School. This week, our staff were led through a session that focused on the consistency of assessment against the achievement standard for each grade level. The sessions led by our Quality Teaching Coaches, Adrian Beard and Sarah Cappelli had staff reviewing student work samples, common assessment tasks and developing rubrics to take student learning ‘to the next level’.

The Wonders of Walking in Penguin - 1/2 MP
The Mighty Penguins had perfect weather on Monday for our first walk of the Term. There is always so much to see and talk about on our Wonder Walks, time just seems to fly by! Penguin is a truly unique, physical environment, perfect for children to explore! We are so fortunate to be able to freely wander through, and wonder about, our dynamic everchanging place. Many children became immersed in their conversations as they make connections with personally significant places and notice ‘ten tiny things’. Highlights from our day included noticing many community features seen on Google Earth in ‘the real world’, filling pockets with ‘treasures’, creating artwork on the beach, seeing familiar faces out and about in the community, and telling many, many stories.
Year 9-10 Japanese Class Visit Prep
During Term 2, the 9-10 Japanese class are doing a unit about Festivals and Culture. On Thursday 26 May the 9-10 Japanese class visited the Prep corridor to explain the Japanese festival Children’s Day. This event occurs in Japan on May 5 and celebrates the happiness and courage of children. Mollie read a small story to the Prep classes that explained how a carp fish used all its courage to swim upstream and became a dragon! This identifies the hope that the Japanese have that all children will grow up to be as strong as the carp fish. The 9-10 students worked in small groups with Prep students to assist them in making their own carp fish. They then gifted pre-prepared origami decorations to students.
The 9/10 Forensics class experimented yesterday with blood typing at a fake crime scene. Students were provided with fake samples from 3 suspects, a victim, crime scene and weapon. Students used the Anti serums to determine the blood types and solve the crime of Earnest Earl.
Beacon Foundation’s Work Based Learning Services collaborated with Penguin High School and local industries to provide students with an industry tour on Thursday 19 May. Students visited local agricultural employers in order to learn more about the potential pathways, skills shortages and opportunities within the region.
Nine adventurous students set off on the bus with Mr Maywald and Sonia Hodgetts from the Beacon Foundation.
Students started the day with a tour of Harvest Moon, in Forth. First up was checking out the processing of the mini ‘Snackable’ carrots and students learned about growing, harvesting and processing of a wide range of vegetables sourced from the Harvest Moon farms. Each student was provided with a free box of Snackable carrots, picked fresh from the farm that day. From Harvest Moon, the next visit was to see the man most enthusiastic about growing tomatoes, Anthony Brandsema, at Turners Beach. Students were able to defrost somewhat within the warm confines of the tomato greenhouse. Brandsema supplies many of the supermarkets across the North West.
Third visit was to Tasmac, in Quioba. We were really grateful for the time and effort Tasmac put into hosting our students. They provided thoughtful career information and talked to students about the shortages within the agricultural machinery industry. We were also lucky to chat with Bruce McIntosh, from the Tasmanian Automotive Chamber of Commerce about starting apprenticeships in mechanical careers. The free hats supplied by Tasmac were appreciated too!
Our final visit was to Hills Transplants. Hills Transplants provide seedlings for many forestry companies, vegetable seedlings for most of the producers statewide and also produces herbs which are supplied fresh to local supermarkets. The Penguin High students were also very lucky to be let loose in the raspberry plants to eat the massive raspberries at the end of the tour.
Thank you to all the employers for committing their valuable time to share their work with students.
The house captains started their dodgeball tournament Thursday at lunchtime. The first round of the 7/8 competition saw the Blythe Tigers take on the Montgomery Blaze.
Well done to all students who participated and to Blythe for taking the win! Next Thursday the Dial Thunder will take on the Duncan Sharks!!
This week is the third round of school football. Both the 7/8 and 9/10 teams are currently undefeated after playing Reece, SBSC & Devonport.
All students should be commended on the way they have conducted themselves so far this season. Rye might be leading the goal kicking for the 7/8 team after kicking 22 goals in round 2!
Keep up the fantastic work!

This workshop is intended for parents and guardians of children but all are welcome!
(this workshop is also new to our program for 2022 and we are currently offering introductory pricing as a way to ensure it is available to as many parents/guardians as possible).
