During times when life seems to be passing by at an increasing rate of knots, there is no better time to take pause and appreciate the important things in life. I think it would be hard to argue that my children and your children are possibly the most important things we have in our lives.
Life seemed to be pretty seamless and timeless prior to having my own children. However, with every 4 terms goes another year and quickly the years seem to be racing away. It feels like only yesterday that I took a leap of faith with my wife, when our own children were aged 2 ½ and 5 years old, by relocating ‘life’ to teach and live in Nanjing China. Whilst it feels like only yesterday, this wonderful life experience and fond memory, is now 10 years ago! Prior to leaving for school this morning, we posted a video to Nanjing International School and wished them a happy 30th Birthday.
Today is also a local day of celebration, ‘World Teachers’ Day’. This is a day to acknowledge our very own Penguin, Tasmanian and Australian teachers. Teachers, whether living in Penguin or Nanjing, go to school each day hoping to make a difference in the lives of the young people for who they care for and are responsible for. Their dedication and desire to improve the life outcomes for the future generations is unquestionable. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our teachers at Penguin District School, who I believe strongly are a very caring and committed crew and thank all our staff who support the learning and wellbeing of the children within our school.
It takes a village to raise a child and it is imperative that our staff and families work collaboratively to ensure the best possible outcomes for our children. Please take the time to share and celebrate your child’s successes and communicate with teachers when there are challenges that need to be resolved together.
The impact of an a amazing teacher is timeless and even though my memory these days is at times questionable, I still have ever lasting memories of teachers from my primary days. Even a couple of times when I found myself in a bit of trouble. These teachers undoubtedly helped to shape me as a young person and instilled in me a love of learning and a desire to have a similar impact when I too became a teacher
So today I’m going to be selfish and take this opportunity to say a big THANKYOU to Mrs Mary French and Mrs Judy Stevens for their fun, firm, fair and friendly approach to educating me during my formative years.
And finally, if you get the chance, take a moment and join me in thanking your child’s teacher(s). I’m certain they’d appreciate it.
Kind regards
Matthew Perry
Assistant Principal
Kinder had their first Library visit last week and had a chance to check out the new Kinder and Prep areas for 2023, they really enjoyed the new spaces and are very excited for next year.

On Wednesday, 26 October, Grade 8’s were privy to the long awaited Wayfarers of Midgard Viking re-enactment group. The students were given a brief overview of the history and migration of the Norsemen across Asia and Europe. Grade 8 HASS learned more about the culture, weaponry, voyages and navigation, as well as clothing and textiles from the Viking era. With the information session coming to a close, the students were able to interact with physical games of the time period and then watched two Vikings dual it out in full armour, using metal swords. All Grade 8’s had a great time, learned a lot and enjoyed this interactive historic extravaganza!

On Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 October, students in Years 9/10 travelled to Hobart to compete in the state netball championships. After an early 5am departure, staff and students made their way to Campbell Town for a much deserved snack break. Once in Hobart, the girls team played two games – one against Clarence High School and one against St Patricks. They then went on to play Burnie High School. The boys team played Queechy High School and Clarence High School.
All players should be commended on their efforts and for representing the school at such a high standard event.
