Next week will see Kinder to Year 6 students returning to school statewide, as the first significant transition point as all students return over the coming weeks.
We really appreciate the work and innovation that has gone in to transitioning into, and supporting the implementation of, learning at home for our students and families. The community response has been highly supportive of the work of our staff and we have been truly appreciative of our families response to the situation.
The direction from the department is that learning from home ceases to be supported by teaching staff from the expected return to school date. These are:
- Kinder-6 and 11/12’s on Monday 25th May
- Year 7-10’s on Tuesday 9th June
Understandably there are some exemptions where children would be expected to remain at home if they have written medical advice and/or an existing condition that defines their health as being vulnerable. In this case, schools have been asked to support these families, which we expect to be a very small percentage. Support from school may include the provision of a device, continuing the current/incomplete learning tasks from Padlet or Teams classes. Beyond this, there will be communication with families via Seesaw or email to support the at home learning in these specific situations until they are able to return to school.
There may be parents who choose to keep their children at home after the appropriate start back dates as outlined above. Advice from the department is that we are moving to one method of teaching and learning that is on-site and face to face. Teachers are not expected to provide any further individualised learning tasks for these students and families will be directed to the department’s website: https://www.education.tas.gov.au/learning-at-home/ Please don’t hesitate to speak with school leadership if there are situations where there may be some uncertainty and we can answer any questions that you may have about your child or families situation.
All school sites have been required to put a COVID safety plan in place which formalises many of the current steps that we already have in place including;
- Hygiene practices will continue to be vigilant as per national and education department guidelines
- If students or staff are appearing or reporting to be unwell, they are required to remain at home until their health improves
- Parents will need to remain outside of the school building at school pick up and drop off
We want to make school as safe as possible for everyone and the gradual introduction of primary and secondary students is part of the government’s response. For Year 7-10 families, it is important that if you can supervise your child’s learning at home until 9th of June, then you should do so. Feel free to ask questions if you require any further information.
As you can imagine, our school staff can’t wait until restrictions are eased and we can celebrate all of the great learning and experiences that happen in our school with the wider community. Thank you for your continued support of your children and of our staff.
Kinder to Year 6 Returning Monday 25 May
Whilst wanting school to return to ‘normal’ as much as possible, there are a number of protocols that we will require our school community to follow in supporting us:
-
Keeping your child home if they are unwell
-
Personal items to stay at home eg sporting equipment, toys or other ‘treasures
-
Not sending cakes or other food items to share when celebrating birthdays
- Parents not entering the school building when dropping off or picking up their children (drop off and pick up points in map below)
-
Adults not gathering in groups around the school site and physical distancing at all times
-
Students who have taken home school owned iPads MUST return their device with the charger and cable to the CLC on arrival to school on Monday
-
If adults are required to enter the school building you must check in at the front office and use the hand sanitiser available
Thank you again for your ongoing support and understanding during this time. If you have any other questions relating to your child returning to school please contact your child’s teacher through Seesaw or contact our administration team on 6434 2222.

Penguin District School Community Cookbook
It has been fabulous to see family recipes being emailed in. It is not too late to have a recipe included, we will be collecting these over Term 2 and the School Holidays.
We are hoping to create a collection of recipes from our families and friends. So start thinking of fail-proof favourites, hearty winter warmers, smashing desserts, anything that is a hit with your family and share them with us by email either typed or a photo of the recipe to penguin.district.school@ed
