For our school community, Term 3 is well and truly underway and it hasn’t taken long at all for students and staff to re-establish connections and routines around teaching and learning. I’ve had the pleasure this week of being in classes and invited by students eager to share their learning across the school. One common thread has been that students are motivated to, and supported to, take responsibility for their own learning and the direction this takes. For me this week, this included seeing a group of preps eager to share their interests by providing a ‘snake show’ to their classmates, complete with tickets and an attendance sheet on arrival! Another example was a Year 3 student that had written a carefully constructed persuasive text about the reasons why students from Year 3 onwards should have their own device to support them with their learning. At the other end of the school, we have senior students that are suggesting new ways to our school leadership of how we can support young Tasmanian Aboriginal students to connect with, and understand, their heritage, history and identity as a Tasmanian Aboriginal. I’m grateful that we have a team of teachers at PDS that can use their knowledge of the curriculum and weave student interest and inquiries to create deliberate learning opportunities that students are highly engaged in and want to share with others.

There have been confirmed cases of chicken pox in schools on the North West Coast, and this has been the case at our primary campus. Please be vigilant in checking your children for any symptoms and seek medical assistance where necessary. Any suspected or positive cases of illnesses like chicken pox must be reported to the school so we can put in the necessary steps to notify the community. An information sheet can be accessed from here
We can’t wait to see you in our Pre Kinder sessions in Term 3.
This program will begin on:
- Monday 24 August - 9:00 am -10:00 am
- Wednesday 26 August - 9.00 am - 10.00 am
Don’t forget to let the office know if you would like to come to the Monday or Wednesday session.
These sessions will be facilitated by our Launching into Learning Coordinator, Jessie Eberhardt for Term 3. The foundation of our Pre Kinder program is based on building familiarity with the spaces and people in your child’s school and to continue to play, learn and grow in a supportive and caring environment.
Here are the links to grab a ticket to Launching into Learning sessions next week.
Jessie Eberhardt will be on leave next week and Wendy Radcliff will be there to facilitate.

It is wonderful to have our students back out on work placement. Workplace learning activities provide relevant and ‘real world’ learning for students and can include experiences such as traditional work experience placements, participating in vocational education and learning programs, activities and taster days. The picture below is Ben onsite at work placement with Fairbrother, currently working in Burnie on the UTAS site at West Park. He has been working all week with the construction team.
Contact Mr Mathew Smart if you have an interest in an industry area and you would like to participate in a work placement or if you have a business that would like to support our students.
