Term 4 & End of Year Celebrations
The end of the school year provides us with some great opportunities to celebrate the achievements of students and recognise the growth they make. Celebration assemblies, picnics, dinners and performances are just a few of the ways that we often invite our families in, or we get out in to the community to mark these occasions. There are still clear protocols in place for us in relation to COVID and each of these activities needs to be carefully thought through in light of these measures. In the coming weeks, and in to early Term 4, we hope to finalise a number of these occasions. Please note that they will all need to have a contingency plan, just in case we find ourselves in a position that we were in earlier in the year. We are still very much looking forward to finding ways to make 2020 a year that can be celebrated in a fitting way, but in line with Public Health guidelines.
Flagged Crossing and School Zones
We are continuing to have near misses and vehicles not obeying the road and safety signage, particularly on Ironcliffe Road. I understand that the vehicles and drivers may not be members of our school community, but we still need to work towards some solutions to change driver behaviour. Tasmania Police have been contacted recently and had supported us by positioning themselves at the flagged crossing to observe driver behaviour. Unsurprisingly, there were no issues as there was a visual presence with a uniformed officer and clearly marked police vehicle. We won’t qualify for a crossing guard as there isn’t enough foot traffic, however I would like us to explore a volunteer system with support from Department of State Growth with training and signs. If you are interested and/or available for a short period of time before or after school as a volunteer crossing guard, please leave your details at the office. We will raise this issue at our School Association meeting on Monday night.
Capital Works Update
The tender applications have been assessed by a panel including DoE, school, parent and representatives from our architects 6ty Degrees. The successful tender will be announced next week and we will start working with them from Wednesday. This illustrates a milestone for us as the lead contractor will start taking over aspects of our site in preparation for construction to commence. At this stage, we will expect to see building works as early as the upcoming term break.
The department will be running some sessions for our Community Reference Group as we move in to this next phase of our rebuild. This is a great way for stakeholder groups to provide their thoughts/insights and to be able to have accurate information to update their own networks.

The Grade 5 and 6 students finished our cross country event in the afternoon with some of the closest finishes ever! Congratulations to you all for encouraging all of your peers to finish 2500 meters as best they could.

This week our focus on the Secondary Campus has been "Pride"
How can you demonstrate pride?
-by feeling happy when you achieve something that is difficult
-setting yourself goals and striving to achieve them.
-living up to the PDS values: Personal Best, Safe & Respectful.
-caring for your belongings
-taking pride in your appearance & being prepared in your full school uniform
-caring for your environment and taking ownership of our learning areas. Eg. Putting rubbish away or pushing chairs in when you’ve finished.
-being proud of our school and being an excellent representative in and away from school.

Tasmanian Indigenous Cultural Connections
We were fortunate to visit the Cultural Hub at Parklands High on Wednesday August 26. This session was facilitated by Guy Grey, in his role as Aboriginal Education Office (AEO) to help connect students to indigenous cultural and heritage.
Students made connections to Tasmanian indigenous culture, history and the palawa people.
Big thank you to Guy from Mount Gnomon farm for hosting our 9-10 Animal Studies class. We all learnt a lot from the visit and the students enjoyed the snacks.
