Where a Little Idea Can Take You
We’ve been highlighting examples of student voice in recent weeks and the impact that student input and activism can take in shaping our school environment and wider community for the better. This week our year 9 and 10 students showcased their products and services as part of their ‘$20 Boss’ enterprise with staff and students able to talk with the stallholders about their ideas and the things that were available for purchase. It’s another great example of student being able to practice some real world skills and enjoy the benefits of their hard work. One of our groups was looking at a social cause that they could have a positive impact on. Cohan and Noah G were motivated to support the homeless or those that may be ‘sleeping rough’. As a result, they have organised ‘Winter Woolies’ silicon wristbands and a casual clothes day for Wednesday 23rd of June for the primary and secondary students with all funds raised going back to their project.
Parent Engagement
The increase in activity at the canteen and the request for parent help has been a great way to increase parent and volunteer engagement in and around our school. A number of parents have approached me recently and have asked about ways that they can help out/or engage in the life of the school. To assist on-site, it is a necessary requirement to have a Registration to Work with Vulnerable People, and this is a relatively simple process through Service Tasmania that we are happy to assist with. For parents that may prefer to engage in other ways, we’d love to hear from you!
- A current survey that we have running is our PDS 3-way Interview Feedback - https://forms.office.com/r/aznmb2UUtr - We’d encourage as many families as possible to complete the survey and this takes around 90 seconds to complete.
- Our next School Association meeting is scheduled for Monday 28th June. Any items for discussion can be put forward through the school administration email penguin.district.school@education.tas.gov.au or by contacting one of our committee members, as put forward in previous newsletters
- Simply putting some suggestions forward through our school Facebook Page, calling the school or emailing me direct on mathew.grining@education.tas.gov.au are all avenues for parents to suggest general feedback or approaches to add value to our school community.
- We are looking for canteen volunteers for Term 3 – please contact the school admin team if you are available to assist from 10:30-1pm on Thursday or Fridays.
"Winter Woolies"
Next Wednesday 23rd of June students are able to have a casual clothes day and encouraged to wear a beanie/scarf as part of the $20 Boss fundraiser for City Mission’s services to support those sleeping rough/homeless. Students will also be bring a ‘Guess the Lollies’ jar around classes with 50c per guess. Please bring a gold coin donation for the casual clothes day.

Kinder making connections to the new site.
All three Kinder classes were very excited last week to go and look at the new build. What caught our eye initially was a line of 3 cement trucks on Iron cliff road. We had questions like: Why were they there? What was going to happen to all the cement inside? How does it get out of the truck? Off we went on a fact finding mission. We looked at the build from several vantage points. It was really exciting to see the cement pump suck up the cement and watch the builders smooth out the slab. We made connections to whose class they were constructing and worked out why builders wear high vis. We cant wait to visit again soon to see what happens next.
Penguin students recently showcased their creativity at the Burnie Eisteddfod in the Original Poem section. Out of 719 poems entered across the Northwest Coast, Penguin shined by placing equal first, second and third in all grades that submitted entries, with Mackenzy’s poem ‘What Makes’ being recognised with an outstanding award. Congratulations to everyone who entered and a big thank you to the Burnie Eisteddfod Committee for providing such a wonderful opportunity for students to share their thinking and passion for the arts.

Tips for fussy eaters
- Involve the kids in the cooking
- Don’t battle over food – instead provide as wide a variety as you can manage and let them choose
- Keep trying! Sometimes it takes 10 or 20 attempts at a food for them to like something!
- Make it fun! (see Kindy kitchen book below)
- Hide food (e.g. zucchini in mince dishes, vitamise the vegies then add to sauces or stews etc.)
- Map what your child eats for a week or two – will help to identify what they are and aren’t eating
