Start of Term 4
It was great to speak with all of our students in the primary and secondary assemblies on the first day of term and see how many of them were excited about reconnecting with their friends and staff. We spoke about the importance of routines and that following a holiday, even for adults this can require some adjustment! Please talk with your children about routines at home that can support their transition in to the start of term 4. Whether it is simple things like packing their own lunchboxes, checking off a reminder list on the fridge, or having some expectations of the amount of sleep and screen time that are healthy for their age and stage of development, routines that you establish in the home can have a positive impact on your child’s time at school.
Class Models for Primary Grades
Planning for the 2022 school year is well underway! Each year we explore a number of different models for our primary classes. Due to the significant growth in numbers at our school, particularly at the primary campus, we have some limitations on our options due to all of our teachable spaces. The model that we believe can best meet student needs across our school and maximising our physical space and resources across the campus will be; Kinder, Kinder, Kinder, Prep, Prep, Year 1-2, Year 1-2, Year 1-2, Year 1-2, Year 1-2, Year 3-4, Year 3-4, Year 3-4, Year 3-4, Year 3-4, Year 5-6, Year 5-6, Year 5-6, Year 5-6.
This keeps our class sizes as low as possible and allows for future enrolments to be managed across multiple classes in our larger cohorts. The alternative would be that a number of classes would start the school year with 29-30 students. Given that we are over 4 months away from the start of the school year, whilst unlikely, the proposed class models are subject to change if there is a big shift in enrolments prior to the start of the year which we will continue to monitor.
We have dedicated and hard-working teachers who are collectively responsible for all of the children in our care at Penguin District School. Our teachers are well placed to assess, plan and teach to the needs for all students and thus make informed decisions on their 2022 class placement. Our goal is to create the most equitable classes possible, taking in to account grade balance, learning needs, social connections etc. Please understand that teachers will make the best decision for all children in the school, including what we believe is in the educational and social/emotional well-being of the majority of students.
We are unable to accommodate personal requests because accommodating everyone’s personal wishes will not support what is best for all children. As per previous years, in the last week of term students were asked to share with their class teachers five students that each child would select as a ‘good learning friend’ to provide student voice and existing connections for the following year.
Congratulations & Farewell!
Many people would remember the wonderful Mrs Jenny Ashton as an educator and Assistant Principal at our primary campus. Across the last 5 years Mrs Ashton has led a number of educational initiatives statewide; including early years and literacy education. This week Mrs Ashton has been announced as the Assistant Director Literacy & Numeracy, and as a result her permanent position as Assistant Principal will be advertised. Whilst our staff will still maintain a connection through her leadership work, we appreciate that Mrs Ashton had a long standing rapport and connection with many of our families. On behalf of our school community, we’d like to thanks Jenny for her outstanding contributions to our school community and wish her well as she starts the 2022 school year in this new role.
School Uniform and Hats
Our uniforms are very distinctive and many new families to the school commented on how wonderful our students looked in full school uniform on the first day. Please ensure that children also have appropriate footwear as per our uniform policy that has been approved by our School Association.
Penguin District School is a ‘sun-safe’ school and hats are required in Terms 1 and 4 for playing outside during recess and lunch breaks and during PE. ‘Sun-safe’ hats are available for purchase from the secondary campus office for $10-$17.
