What beautiful winter days we have been having. As I put these few words together I look outside to the blue skies and calm seas. Hasn’t it been great to experience an autumn and early winter with such lovely days. Lyrics from a song that we have on our PA system come to mind – ‘it’s a wonderful, wonderful life’.
It’s so important that we feel gratitude for the good things. When reflecting on the many traumatic events that are currently taking place around the world I hope that you feel blessed to be here in this little place of paradise that we call home - Penguin.
The tone in our school, as we draw to the end of the seventh week of term, matches the recent weather. The learning is calm and measured – classrooms are bright and vibrant. The mood is positive. Indeed, school days are good days – something that should not be missed.
As a school we strive to always be improving. To do this we set targets and goals with a School Improvement Plan. Attendance is one of our priorities. We continue to celebrate being above the state average with our attendance figures. Let’s keep it up. Enjoy the sunshine. Enjoy the fun times at school. Enjoy the challenge of learning. Thank you to our families for partnering with us to ensure that attendance is high.
Inevitably, winter gives us a reminder that its not always going to be blue skies and crisp sunny mornings. As the weather deteriorates, there might be the temptation to wear items of clothing that aren’t part of our uniform. Let’s work together to maintain the exceptionally high standard that we currently have with our uniform. Please ask if you are ever unsure of what our uniform requirements are.
This week, we’ve had students represent our school at Symmons Plains with the statewide schools cross country event. Congratulations to all those that participated and put their best foot forward, stride after stride, to represent themselves and our school so admirably.
Many of our primary student families have taken the opportunity this week to attend meetings to discuss their child’s progress. These ‘Communicating Learning with Families’ meetings are an invaluable opportunity for families to connect with their child’s teachers and strengthen the partnership of learning and trust. Thank you to everyone who has been able to attend.
Thanks also to all who have rallied behind the MND Hose Down fundraiser that is currently happening. A whopping $1540.65 has been raised to date - which is amazing. ‘Bounties’ have been placed on certain staff to ensure that they get their fair share of cold hosing – so keep supporting the fundraiser and stay posted on this event. Currently the fundraising champion class is 9A, with 7A, 3/4E, 5/6A, 5/6C and 5/6D hot on their heels.
So, as the sun sets on another week, let’s be thankful for all that we have, both here at school and in our local community.
Yours in partnership
Robert Maywald
Acting Assistant Principal
This term in Foods and Fibre Year 7 students have been creating a pot-holder using cross-stitch skills. There has been a lot of creativity and everyone has definitely improved their sewing skills
Year 8 students have been busy in the kitchen learning skills and creating a variety of dishes including Mexican tortillas. Most foods are eaten at the end of the cooking time so the students can enjoy what they have made.
The Hospitality class has been busy honing their Barista skills and making a variety of sweet and savoury foods which are sold to staff to help raise funds to go toward subsidising a certified Barista course which will be offered later in the term
The Year 9-10 Foods class has been “Around the World” this term, starting in China with Chicken and Corn soup and making their way through Mexico, Italy, France, Wales and Thailand. Panna cotta with Raspberry Coulis was a definite crowd favourite.
The euphoria has barely eased since the arrival of the first order of Year 10 celebration tops. Whilst taking photos, Annabella suggested that modelling experience could now be added to their on-going transition plans. Speaking of transition, our year 10s will attend a Taster Day at Hellyer College on Monday 23 June. Information will be sent home shortly, but they have already selected their preferences for the day and are eagerly awaiting their timetable.
Our Year 9 and 10’s finish their half-year courses at the end of term 2, and they are currently considering their course options for the next half year.
Four of our students are writing for the Central Coast Voice newsletter. You will find Dylan and Nitro’s article under Stem and Tempi and Mikayla’s article is under Student Insiders. Great work team!
It continues to be busy in Year 9-10 Digital Technology space. Students are continuing to hone their skills using HTML and CSS coding languages to create and control Web Page content and designs. Other students have extended their skills using the coding languages C++ and C# which is the language of gaming and computer program designs, now able to run their code in a virtual space. While plenty of language coding is happening, other students have enabled their passions with digital animation programs Pivot, artistic animation programs with Krita and OpenToonz. Web design using CANVA, and 3D printables using Tinkercad.
With all this activity, we have made a space for 8 of the talented coders to travel to Hobart to the Australia Federal Police re_BOOTCMP conference in conjunction with Tas TAFE, where the students can compete in gaming against the AFP, and code in a Cyber Security space. They will hear from top security advisors, engage in interactive activities with the AFP Cyber Security team and look at future career pathways.
