Traffic Safety in & Around School
Following concerns through our School Association about student safety at peak times, you may see our senior staff in and around the turning circle and car park areas monitoring driver behaviour. Whilst it was raining heavily Thursday morning, parents and students were in good spirits and driving to the conditions. We know that our increased student numbers are putting a strain on peak times, particularly between 8:20-8:50 of a morning and around 2:50pm of an afternoon. To make the flow of students and traffic easier, we ask that all drivers consider the following;
- The turning circle is for ‘kiss and drop’ pick up/drop off only. Parents should not be leaving their vehicles to assist children in/out of the car – if this support is required, please find a car spot nearby to allow the safe and smooth movement of cars through the turning circle
- Abide by the 10 min limit on the car parks near kinder
- Display disabled passes on your dashboard if using these disability car spaces
- Follow the signage around the school ie student crossings, speed limits
- Drive at a ‘walking speed’ on internal roads to the Community Learning Centre and through all car parks
- Be courteous to other drivers
- And always be vigilant of where students may be around your vehicle
Tas Police will continue to monitor the school zones to ensure that road rules including the 40km in school zones is followed.
Intake Areas
Our School Association is putting together a response in relation to the review of intake areas or ‘zones’ for government schools. Two areas that were discussed as requiring further exploration from the draft plans were the proposal that Heybridge and Blythe Heads were no longer within Penguin’s intake area, and that the existing town boundary of the Lawn Cemetery and Allens Road is a logical eastern boundary, instead of including some sections of Lobster Creek Road.
If you would like to submit any feedback for the School Association, please don’t hesitate to speak with one of the executive members, or email penguin.district.school@education.tas.gov.au
Beach to Bush – What Penguin Means to Me
The Penguin 7 Day Makeover Committee have been awarded a Tas Community Fund Grant to continue improvements and beautification in and around Penguin’s CBD.
A great opportunity for us to engage with their efforts is through an arts project that they have to ‘dress up’ the bollards in front of the pharmacy and bank in the main street. They would like to step away from the heavily ‘Penguin’ themed bollards/bins etc with the design brief of ‘Beach to Bush – what Penguin means to me.’
Students are asked to use A3 paper/card for drawing a representation of what this idea means to them. It may be mountain biking with friends, hitting the skatepark or picnics on the beach with the grandparents. The A3 artworks will be scanned and transferred to vinyl wraps to be placed on the bollards.
Clear, recognisable pictures/phrases and bold colours would give the artwork a higher impact and be more recognisable.
Artwork needs to be submitted to the primary or secondary office by Friday 3 April and the committee will make a decision if the number of artworks exceeds the number of bollards and distribute any relevant prizes.
We think this is a great way of increasing our school and student presence in town and encourage students to take up this challenge.

Well done to all our students who participated in the Junior Surf Life Saving Championships on the weekend.
Congratulations to Fletcher who was awarded Tasmanian Junior Lifesaver of the Year and a special mention to Noah who was also a finalist. The award recognises achievements in all aspects surf lifesaving, not only as a competitor, but also sportsmanship, knowledge, contribution to surf life saving and the broader community.
Well done to Lauchlan, Campbell, Braith, Jobie, Noah and Harvey who have been selected for the AFL Tassie Devils North West Development Series team that will take part in the Academy Gala Day on Sunday March 15.

The wellbeing of all students is important to us. A letter with more information has been sent home with all Year 4 to 12 students. Please note the form only needs to be returned if you DO NOT wish for your child to participate.
If you would like further information on the Student Wellbeing Survey, this can be found at www.education.tas.gov.au/about-us/projects/child-student-wellbeing-strategy/ or can be collected from the school.
For questions or concerns, or to view the questions, please email schoolsurveys@education.tas.gov.au or contact our school office on 6434 2222.
Secondary Campus PSRs - Big Green Penguins
Congratulations to the following people whose names were drawn out of the Secondary Campus PSR boxes. Students and staff get their names in the PSR boxes for demonstarting the PSR - Personal Best, Safety, Respect.
Year 7 - Gregan and Taylah - Personal Best
Year 8 - Karter - Respect
Year 9 - Jobie - Personal Best
Year 10 - Kira - Personal Best
Staff - Mrs White - Respect
Congratulations and enjoy your movie pass.
“It is the talk about the book, not the reading itself that is important. “Perfect” reading is not the point — rather the interaction around the book and the level of involvement by the child during the reading that makes a difference.”
What a fabulous day we had at the track. Well done to all our primary students who gave their personal best, actively participating and having fun with their friends.
Thank you to all the staff and Year 10 students that ensured the event ran smoothly, assisting to make it a great carnival. It was also wonderful to see so many spectators encouraging and supporting our students.
More photos next week and the final points tally will be revealed in our primary assembly in week 6.
Good luck to our primary students who have been selected to represent Penguin District at the North West Primary School Athletics Carnival on Wednesday 11 March.

Ulverstone Soccer Club – Primary Roster
A letter for interested soccer players will be distributed soon. To indicate your child’s interest in the upcoming roster, please return the slip to the school office so teams can be entered. Parent assistance will be vital. A coach/team manager and a referee will be required, and as those who have been involved understand, this roster is all about sportsmanship and having a go – so an understanding of the game will be an advantage, but is definitely not essential!!!
The Ulverstone Soccer Club require a representative from each school to join a junior committee, so please let Mrs Van Essen know if you are able to fulfil this role.
Under 8’s program will consist of some drills then a game, with new teams being made up each week.
Under 10’s and Under 12’s will have school teams on a roster system.
The start date is the 25th of April (Anzac Day). It will be a fun day with a BBQ and assistance with registration.
The first rostered game will take place on the 2nd of May.
Registrations will need to be completed prior to the first roster game. There will be people at the Anzac Day Fun Day to assist with any questions or help with registration.
Registration fees:
Under 8’s - $65.
Under 10’s and Under 12’s - $90.
Registrations will be open on the 1st of March.
Ticket to Play is available again this year for those who are eligible.
Details of how to register and Ticket to Play will be on the Ulverstone Soccer Club facebook page and for more information, please contact Elise Mee, the Registrar of the Ulverstone Soccer Club on 0409 544 716 or Mrs. Van Essen through the Primary campus office.
