As a school community, we enjoy sharing the successes of our students and staff. Often it may be the efforts of individual students, or of a larger group or team where we celebrate the great things that are happening. In the past few weeks, our community have been recognised at a state and national level for going above and beyond in making a difference in our local area. The Penguin Surf Club was announced as the Club of the Year at the National Surf Lifesaving Awards. Considering the size and scale of clubs on the mainland, this is an extraordinary effort by all involved. Penguin was also announced as the Tidy Town of the Year at the state awards, with our town now representing Tasmania at the national event. One criteria is the involvement of schools and youth programs in the community, and this is something we have had a concerted focus on in recent years. Earlier this year Riana Cricket Club were acknowledged with the Community Partnership of the Year in Cricket Tasmania’s state awards for engaging their local community in fundraising efforts for bushfire relief. We are a community where we have much to be grateful for and we don’t need to look too far to see ordinary people doing pretty amazing things. Congratulations to everyone involved in these initiatives that have been recognised at a state and national level.
Capital Works Update
Our school redevelopment is progressing as scheduled. The demolition of the old music, textiles and administration area is complete and framing up of new rooms in this area has commenced. A number of people are curious as to the layout of the redevelopment and what is happening with the primary campus at the completion of the project. The primary campus is being retained by the Department of Education and will be a regional base for Learning Services. We have attached a link to a 3D flyover that gives a bit of a perspective of the completed redevelopment. This doesn’t include the playground and other external sports courts.

Mr Perry’s favourite author/illustrator is Peter Brown and therefore he couldn’t just pick one book!
Earlier this year a number of our students participated in the Australian Maths Competitions. Well done and congratulations to the following students who received special recognition for the efforts.
Our certificates have finally arrived and will be presented to the following students at the next Monday meeting.

North-West Primary School Basketball Tournament
Penguin District School entered a 5/6 boys team into the Basketball Tasmania North-West Primary School Champs at the weekend and with many Penguin Basketball Association representative players we entered division 1.
The tournament started with a game against Devonport Christian School who we would meet again over the weekend.
The game was a tough opener and behind the great team play the group was lead by Mason (26pts) and Lincon (8pts) to a 44-40 win.
The next game would be against a gritty Burnie Primary group. We struggled early but pulled away in the second half to gain a 42-32 win and a berth in a semi final. Again the game was a great performance from Mason (29pts) and well helped by Jaxx, Charlie and Hudson.
The semifinal would be our first game on Sunday and another contest agains Burnie Primary who had played a qualifying game to get to the semi. We played our best game of the first 3 to grab a 60-30 win. It was an all-around team effort lead by Mason (20pts) with key contributors Roman, Connor, Nate & Logan. This win saw us advance to the grand final late on Sunday against Devonport Christian School.
The grand final started well for us, rushing out to an early 12-0 lead behind great play from Mason and Roman. At halftime the lead was 28-13. The defensive efforts from Charlie, Avery and Connor were impressive.
It was a close second half but we managed to hold on for a 40-30 win.
We would like to thank Damon Kingshott & Jason Lynch for coaching and Nat Barker for managing.
We are now qualified for the State Championship tournament in Launceston in early December.
