Nothing warms the heart more that seeing students at both ends of the age spectrum working together. As a district school we are in a unique position to create opportunities through peer learning and mentoring, through to understanding the concept of community, and for us this extends from students as young as 4 through to 18 years of age. This week our year 10’s have started working on our school magazine ‘The Gnomon’. School magazines provide a snapshot in time, of what school life was like, key events and memorable moments that occurred during that school year. Our school magazine class decided that they would start this year’s work by interviewing the kinders and asking them questions about what they enjoy about their time at school to then use in the magazine. Listening to the nerves of some of our eldest students quickly softened by the joy and enthusiasm of our kinders was a pleasure to see and listen to. Comments from kinders ranging from ‘you smell nice!’ to ‘will I get to see you again?’ and ‘please come back and play with us tomorrow!’ had our year 10’s reflecting on when they first started school and reminding them of how simple life feels when you are 5!
Our school magazine class will be taking orders soon for this year’s magazine, and just like a time capsule, it will provide plenty of treasures for them to look back fondly in years to come.

Year 1/2 SM & 1/2 Mc Sharing in Assembly
1/2SM (previously 1/2SC) will be sharing with 1/2Mc in next weeks assembly, Thursday August 12 at 1.30pm.
Prep to Year 2 students have been focusing on the Olympics for the beginning of Term 3, as Tokyo are the lucky hosts. In Week 2, we talked about how the Japanese would be cheering for their team saying "ganbare", students learned the words like “strong”, “Olympics” and “great”, they decorated their own flag - some creating their own, showing some Aussie pride or drawing a big red circle for the Japanese flag. This week we have looked at the two mascots for both the Olympics and Paralympic games - Miraitowa and Someity and the special meaning behind each of their names. We talked about the different translations of sports, like how basketball and swimming are pronounced - basuketobooru and suiei.
BOOK WEEK 2021 AND DRESS UP DAY WEDNESDAY 25TH AUGUST
Each year across Australia, the Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together to celebrate CBCA Book Week. During this time schools celebrate Australian children’s literature with a focus on Australian authors. This year’s National book week celebration will take place from the 21st – 27th August (Week 6.)
Confirmed dress up day is Wednesday the 25th August we will be holding our annual book week celebration dress up day. The theme for Children’s Book Week 2021 is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. Children can dress up as any book character, it doesn't need to fit with the theme.
More information can be found at CBCA
Hannah, Estelle and Taylah went on a trip to Hiscott Park, Main Beach and the Leven River to collect water samples from each location. These samples are to be used for a science investigation for Science Week. Their experiment is to test the water quality and relate that to how aquatic life can survive and thrive in the different bodies of water. Science Week is in week 5 this term, where all students from Years 7-9 participate in an event where they present a science board and get judged on what investigation has the most interesting, organised and analysed work. It is an excellent learning environment and is a great opportunity to showcase what you know and have learnt.

The wellbeing of all students at Penguin District School is important to us. We want to ensure that all our young people are supported to succeed as connected, resilient, creative and curious thinkers.
The survey provides an opportunity for all students from Years 4-12 to tell us about their wellbeing. The survey runs between August 23 to September 17 2021. A letter with more information will be sent out next week.
