Doors for Mentors Launch
With the Secondary Surf Carnival postponed, four of our year 10 student leaders attended the launch of the Doors For Mentors at the Gnomon Pavilion in Ulverstone on Wednesday morning. Doors to Mentors is a community-driven mentoring program supporting young people (aged 15-24) in the Central Coast to identify and achieve their aspirations. The concept was developed as part of the 100 Day Challenge, a Beacon Foundation/Central Coast Council partnership to engage key stakeholders, including Penguin students, to create a project that would create ‘real’ community impact. The result is that 100 mentors were recruited in the 100 days following the initial workshops. We will continue to keep the community updated on future progress and opportunities to be involved.
WeDoFoGo
This year has been named the International Year of Plant Health by the United Nations, encouraging us to pause and reflect on our actions and the impact of healthy plants and forests on food security, poverty, economic development, and sustainability. As a school, we know that we need to lead the way in creating social change in the community. During the year you will see a change in the waste habits at school, starting with us reaching out to Central Coast Council to increase our provision of recycling bins and requesting FOGO (Food Organics Garden Organics) bins. This builds on a number of inquiries from our primary classes last year and active parents offering to set up soft plastic collection points at school.
Changes to Bus Routes
I’ve enjoyed a few trips as a passenger sitting in the front seat of our school bus services recently. My intention is to travel on each of the school services over the next few weeks, starting with those that have had changes to the bus routes. The bus routes and contracts are managed by the Department of State Growth, however, we understand that the school is the best place for gathering information and feedback about the current structure. Thank you to the parents that have provided some thoughts already. I ask that parents continue to do so, as we will be able to table this at our School Association if there is a need for the current routes and timetable to be reviewed. Email feedback can go to penguin.district.school@education.tas.gov.au
International Women’s Day
As a school, each year our grade 5-12 female students come together to listen to a guest speaker as we mark International Women’s Day. We are very pleased that this year we have internationally published author Rachael Treasure and professional jockey Raquel Clark.
Rachael was born and educated in Tasmania, before moving to the mainland for a large part of her life. She has gone on to publish a number of Australian bestsellers largely dealing with contemporary issues related to agriculture and life on the land, rural youth issues and relationships set within the Australian rural culture and traditions.
Raquel is a former Penguin student that relocated to the mainland to further her career in racing. She has had more than 3000 professional starts, placed in 45% of her races and has crossed the line for 350 race wins in a highly successful career. We are honoured that both of these talented and successful Tasmanians have generously offered to share their journey and insights with our girls.

Penguin District School values the contribution that students make within the community, please keep us informed of significant student achievements by emailing penguin.district.school@education.tas.gov.au or send a message via the Penguin District School Facebook page.
Penguin District School has high expectations concerning the wearing of the School Association endorsed school uniform. It’s our belief that the wearing of the uniform
creates a sense of belonging;
places all students on the same level in terms of clothing;
gives our students and our community a sense of pride in our school, and
contributes to the safety and wellbeing of our students.
We would like to highlight that socks being worn to school are required to be plain black, grey or white.
If you are currently experiencing financial hardship, please contact the school for a confidential conversation about how we can best support you and your student with uniform needs.
Our Uniform Policy along with other information and ordering details can be found on our website https://penguindistrict.education.tas.edu.au/forms-documents/uniform
What a messy uniform means - LIFT
I know that my uniform got really messy today but it helps to show all that I’ve been learning and what I’ve been thinking about!
Painting helps to develop my creativity and fine motor skills. Even though I wear a smock, sometimes paint finds its way onto my shorts.
This grass stain shows I’ve been exploring outside developing my physical and social skills. Fundamental movements like running and jumping help with small movements like writing.
Today I went on a search for insects outside. I lifted a log and got a bit dirty. Through this inquiry, I worked out that all the insects have 6 legs.
At recess was trying to open a tub of fruit and spilt the juice. I’m learning how to be independent by risk taking and having a go to do things by myself.
Sometimes my uniform gets a little wet. I explore lots of Maths and Science concepts while using the water play tub.
I love digging and building with dirt and sand. I’m discovering all types of new things, like how the soil colours change the deeper you dig.
This playdough has stuck to my shirt. I worked really hard to work out the best way for the playdough to join together, it helped when I kneaded the dough. I am a problem solver.
This black mark was made with a texta, I’m trying so hard to develop my writing and drawing skills.
Secondary Campus Applied Learning Courses
At the end of 2019 students had the opportunity to submit their preferences for their 2020 Applied Learning courses. This information was then used to select the courses that run in 2020 and how the timetable and class groupings were constructed. At the start of every year there are often a large number of requests from students and parents in relation to students changing their Applied Learning courses.
To ensure that parents are kept informed of any changes that may have occurred for their child - a letter will come home with Secondary Campus students in the next few days. This letter will include a current timetable which outlines the courses they are currently enrolled in. The will be a return slip at the bottom of the letter and we request that parents sign and return this once they have viewed their child's timetable. Should you wish to discuss course selections, please don’t hesitate to contact me via email geoffrey.davis@education.tas.gov.au
Secondary Campus Common Assessment Tasks (CATs)
As part of the Penguin District School 'Assessing and Monitoring Plan' students on the Secondary Campus will be involved in Common Assessment Tasks or CATs. A Common Assessment Task (CAT) is a piece of evidence that is produced by all students studying a subject at that year level. These assessable tasks form a significant part of the assessment cycle and are an opportunity to report to parents on an individual student’s progress. Each full year course will have a minimum of two CATs per year. Each half year course will have a minimum of 1 CAT per year.
It is important to note that this CAT report is only referring to how a student has performed on one specific task, which will assess only a small part of a relevant curriculum. When determining each student’s level of achievement for mid-year and end of year reports, teachers will consider a variety of sources of data including performance on CATs, standardised tests, classwork, work habits and class discussions. All CATs (except for tests) will be assessed through use of a rubric.
Students will be required to take home CATs for parents to view and the notification of these will be given through the school app. Each task will be accompanied by a 'Common Assessment Task - Parent Communication Report' which will contain details about the task and the assessment given.
If you would like more information please don't hesitate to contact the school office.
